While it's not the easiest knot to tie in this situation, I tie a palomar knot.  I've tried many different knots over the years, and my personal opinion the palomar is the toughest, most dependable knot going and it's worth it to me to use it even on crankbaits.

I'll second Rob on the palomar. I tie every thing with it. I have found that if I break off and am lucky enough to retreive what I broke off that it is always the line that broke and never the knot. I even tie it on my ice jigs and that is a challenge.

Reading Todd's post made me crack up, because it's so true about the knot with the ice jigs...makes me remember the cussing that goes on in the shack when tying. Cheesy

Far as for crankin I use the palomar also.   Simply because I fish all cranks on light flourocarbon because I think it will allow your bait to run the deepest.    Flouro does not do well with clinch knots, specially light flouro.

Otherwise its 99% improved clinch for all of my knots.  Been using it since I was a little kid and can't say I ever remember one failing really.

I do use the rapala knot for fishing a spook, frog or jerkbait though.  Anything you can do to help the action is well worth it IMO.
